Preserving Lodi’s past to enrich its future

Walk into a well-preserved older home, and one of the first things you'll notice is the quiet solidity of the walls. Unlike modern drywall, traditional lath and plaster construction has a substantial feel that helps dampen sound and adds to the craftsmanship that gives historic homes their enduring appeal. Time, however, takes its toll. Cracks appear, sections loosen, and years of settling or renovations can leave plaster looking worse for wear. The good news is that many d

Older homes have a character that's hard to duplicate—from handcrafted trim to solid wood floors and detailed masonry. Hidden behind those walls, however, may be an electrical system that was designed for a very different era. Knob-and-tube wiring, fuse boxes, and undersized electrical panels often struggle to meet the demands of today's appliances, electronics, and HVAC equipment. Modernizing an aging electrical system isn't just about convenience. It can improve safety, i

Every old house has a story. Sometimes it's told through hand-carved newel posts or stained-glass windows. Sometimes it's hidden behind layers of wallpaper or tucked away in an attic beneath forgotten trunks. And sometimes, it's right beneath your feet. Walk into a century-old home where the original hardwood floors have survived generations of footsteps, and you'll notice something modern flooring rarely possesses. The boards are wider. There are certain sounds that belong only to old houses. The gentle creak of a heart pine staircase. The soft rattle of a sash window settling into its frame. The deep, reassuring thump of a solid wood door closing against a century-old jamb. And then there's the sound every preservationist knows by heart—the crisp, mechanical click of a well-tuned mortise lock. Unlike the lightweight tubular locksets found in most modern homes, a traditional mortise lock announces itself w

Stand in front of an old window on a sunny morning and you'll notice something modern glass rarely offers. The light shimmers instead of passing straight through. Trees ripple gently across the surface, their reflections bending ever so slightly in the subtle waves of hand-drawn glass. The muntins cast crisp shadows across worn pine floors, and the soft bevel of aged glazing putty catches the sunlight much as it did a century ago. These are the quiet details that give an ol
